Joseph Truong

York University, Business Administration, 2017

Joseph is a graduate of the Bachelor of Business Administration program from the Schulich School of Business at York University. He is passionate about creating innovative solutions to tackle some of the world’s most relevant and pressing issues. He founded Empower, a social enterprise with a technology that provides refugees with reliable, fast, and affordable access to content on the internet – without the need of mobile data. Empower was created in response to the Hult Prize Challenge on restoring the rights and dignity of over 10 million refugees and was recognized by Nobel Peace Laureate Muhammad Yunus, Bill Clinton, and Justin Trudeau. Before pitching his venture at the United Nations Headquarters in New York for $1 million in seed funding, Joseph spent two months piloting and living in refugee camps as well as urban settlements across Sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, he was awarded the 2017 Chinese Canadian Entrepreneur Scholarship Award for his leadership, community work and entrepreneurial mindset. Joseph has travelled extensively to over 15 countries in the past few years and this experience has altered his global perspective and desire to make a difference.
